You’re not going turbo on us? With Mitsubishi you better bet!

Earlier this month at a Mitsubishi make conference with its dealerships the automotive companies announced that the next generation of vehicles with have a little more pep in their step.  The models will have completely updated turbocharged engines.  Leading the way is 1.5 liter turbocharged engines for the 2018 midsize crossover segment.  This should make the die hard Mitsubishi fans excited.  The brand was notorious for being an early adopter of turbocharging in the 1980’s and 1990’s and boosting sales during that time.

Dealers who attended the meeting said Mitsubishi showed images of the crossover that is slotted between the next generation Outlander Sport and Outlander.  Mitsubishi also told dealers that it may only sell 100,000 vehicles per year in the U.S. ,but it is the biggest and most profitable market for Mitsubishi.  Making the US ideal for investment.  Mitsubishi higer ups are considering a turbocharged 1.1 liter engine for the next generation of the Mirage and supcompact cars.  In addition to the 1.1 liter engine a larger turbocharged engine is being developed for the next generation of the Outlander three row crossover.

“They know we’re their best chance,” said Ryan Gremore, chairman of Mitsubishi’s dealer council and general manager of O’Brien Mitsubishi in Normal, Ill. “You put your resources where you get your best results.”

Don Swearingen, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, told dealers that he and CEO Ryujiro Kobashi are traveling to Japan this month to advocate for the turbocharged engine in the Outlander. In an interview, Swearingen said Mitsubishi needs the boosted engine to move the Outlander upscale as fuel economy standards grow more stringent.

The Mitsubishi Family Gets a Makeover

Mitsubishi Motors North America executive vice president, Don Swearingen, has let us in on a secret – The front-end design of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander will be imitated on a range of the brand’s other models over the next 12 months. Which means Mitsubishi is getting a makeover!

“This new brand identity that you see on this car will carry over. In the US, after this vehicle we’re going to first go with the Outlander Sport (ASX).So, later this year – production begins in October, it’ll be in the stores in November/December – and you will see a similar front design change. Then for us in the States, in the February/March timeframe, it will come to the Mirage. So you will see it. We don’t offer the [Mirage] sedan model here, but we will be offering that starting next year. And you’ll see the new styling elements carry over to those models,” stated Swearingen.

“We have a Lancer, which is of course different to the Mirage,” Swearingen said. “We still plan to have the Lancer here in the US – we are going to make modifications and changes to it. We’re making some front-end changes this year on that – not as drastic as this, but we are making modifications..

“I know we’re working on it. As many people have discussed, we were in a partnership discussion with another OEM. Those talks broke down. We’re still looking for a strategic partner to work with on that. But it’s a big part of our sales in the US, and we’re committed to keeping the car here. We understand it’s long in the tooth, but clearly it’s a great seller for us, and continues to be”

MPG Is Top When Buying a New Car

Even though we’ve seen a drop in gas prices around Pittsburgh and Western PA over the past couple of months, new car buyers still want fuel-efficient cars, according to J.D. Power and Associates’ 2015 Avoider Study. This study, which monitors the reasons consumers buy or do not buy vehicles, claims MPG is the top factor in new vehicle purchases for the fourth year in a row.

Consumers are “going to own these vehicles for many, many years. They want [mileage] to remain low during their ownership period,” research director Jon Osborn told Automotive News.

To reach these findings, the 12th annual Avoider Study surveyed almost 30,000 new car owners. Among buyers of compact, small, and midsize cars, 14 percent said that gas mileage was the most influential reason for choosing the vehicle they ended up purchasing. Similarly, 16 percent of shoppers rejected a vehicle in favor of a more fuel-efficient model.

And with an outstanding line of fuel-efficient cars, Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi is the place in Western PA to buy a new car. From the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage with an impressive, best-in-class 43 MPG to the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer with a cool 34 MPG, these cars will save you tons at the pump. If you’re looking for a larger vehicle, don’t forget about the Mitsubishi Outlander with an outstanding 31 MPG and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with a sweet 30 MPG.
