The Mitsubishi Family Gets a Makeover

Mitsubishi Motors North America executive vice president, Don Swearingen, has let us in on a secret – The front-end design of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander will be imitated on a range of the brand’s other models over the next 12 months. Which means Mitsubishi is getting a makeover!

“This new brand identity that you see on this car will carry over. In the US, after this vehicle we’re going to first go with the Outlander Sport (ASX).So, later this year – production begins in October, it’ll be in the stores in November/December – and you will see a similar front design change. Then for us in the States, in the February/March timeframe, it will come to the Mirage. So you will see it. We don’t offer the [Mirage] sedan model here, but we will be offering that starting next year. And you’ll see the new styling elements carry over to those models,” stated Swearingen.

“We have a Lancer, which is of course different to the Mirage,” Swearingen said. “We still plan to have the Lancer here in the US – we are going to make modifications and changes to it. We’re making some front-end changes this year on that – not as drastic as this, but we are making modifications..

“I know we’re working on it. As many people have discussed, we were in a partnership discussion with another OEM. Those talks broke down. We’re still looking for a strategic partner to work with on that. But it’s a big part of our sales in the US, and we’re committed to keeping the car here. We understand it’s long in the tooth, but clearly it’s a great seller for us, and continues to be”

Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander Sport: Twinning or Not?

While the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport may seem like twins, they’re more like cousins. They share the same bloodline, but they have their own characteristics and traits that make them unique. And while we’re fans of both models here at Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi, we narrowed down the differences to help you find which one better suits your lifestyle.

Performance Preference

Both the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander Sport are equipped with efficient, powerful standard engines. However, each powertrain offers different levels of performance output.

Mitsubishi Outlander: Equipped with a standard 2.4L I-4 engine that produces 166 horsepower and gets an estimated 31 MPG on the highway. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 1,500 lbs.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport: Uses a standard 2.0L I-4 engine that puts out 148 horsepower while getting an estimated 32 MPG on the highway. It is not rated for towing.

Interior Space

As families grow, they typically need more space. Think about your family now and five years from now. How does it look?

Mitsubishi Outlander: Is ideal for larger families who need plenty of passenger space. The Outlander can comfortably seat up to 7 passengers, offering a total of 128.2 cubic feet of interior space and 10.3 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport: Is great for single drivers and small families. It seats up to 5 occupants with 97.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and can accommodate up to 21.7 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row.

Accessories

Both the Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander Sport are fully equipped with a variety of standard features that provide both comfort and convenience. Each of these models comes with Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, a USB port for audio playback, and steering wheel-mounted controls. Optional features, like a navigation system and front fog lights, are available for both models as well.

So which Mitsubishi is right for you? Bring the whole family and test one out at Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi on Route 30 in North Huntingdon today!

How the PHEV Works

Cousin to the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV became the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV when it went on sale overseas early 2014. This first-of-its-kind road warrior gets a staggering 148 mpg with an absurdly low emissions rate.

But how does it work? The Outlander PHEV puts out a combined 204 horsepower from two electric motors—one on each axle for four-wheel drive—as well as a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. Normally, the PHEV runs in pure electric mode with 161 horsepower.

When the battery charge drops below a certain level, the gasoline engine kicks in to generate electricity. Mitsubishi calls this Series mode, which will work up to 70 mph. At higher speeds, a clutch engages to connect the engine directly to the front wheels, providing drive while recharging the battery at the same time.

The Outlander PHEV can reach a top speed of 108 mph. There’s also a mode that fires up the engine to charge the battery for later use, while shift paddles on the steering wheel increase the force of the regenerative braking, charging the battery faster.

2014-mitsubishi-outlander-engine-21

With a full battery and fuel tank, the Outlander PHEV can manage a claimed 560 miles without stopping. Charging takes about five hours from a domestic socket, or an 80 percent charge can be achieved in 30 minutes from a fast charger. Of course, the fuel tank can be topped up for instant mobility too.

There’s still no word when these sweet machines will be on sale in the US, but one thing is for sure: We’re excited.

Mitsubishi Doubles down on Green SUV’s

Most SUVs and crossover vehicles are known gas guzzlers, forcing their drivers into feelings or eco-guilt as they power down the road. But the truth of the matter is, you don’t necessarily need to be a card-carrying member of Greenpeace to reap the benefits of an eco-friendly ride while still having space to haul your friends and cargo.

And Examiner.com knows this all-too-well, as they recently ranked the Top Ten Green SUVs and Crossovers. On that list were none other than the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

What they said about the Mitsubishi Outlander:

(Green Score 42; 25/31 mpg). Bigger sibling to the Outlander Sport, this midsize crossover is conservatively styled and features a 2.0-liter 166-horsepower four-cylinder engine and gearless CVT automatic transmission. It’s less “green,” though quicker in the top GT version with its 3.0-liter 224- horsepower V6 engine. A third-row seat is included for the kiddies.

What they say about the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport:

(Green score 42; 25/32 mpg). The stylish Outlander Sport isn’t particularly sporty, but it’s a solid performer, packing a peppy and fuel-efficient 2.0-liter 148-horsepower four-cylinder engine.

Top 10 Reasons We’re Thankful for the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

It’s November, which means it’s almost Thanksgiving! In the spirit of the season, here are the top 10 reasons we’re thankful for the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

mitsusbishi outlander sport, mitsubishi outlander sport pittsburgh

1.) The 2015 Outlander Sport gets an impressive 25/32 miles per gallon, which is exponentially better than other gas-guzzling SUVs on the market.
2.) It’s always safety first when it comes to this vehicle, especially with the standard Mitsubishi’s FUSE Hands Free Link System, which allows occupants to control audio and smartphone functions using voice commands.
3.) And speaking of safety, the Outlander Sport has one of the top ratings in its class in the small overlap frontal crash test.
4.) Thicker front door glass and more rear body insulation reduce interior noise in the Outlander Sport’s cabin.
5.) A clean, simple dash layout makes it easy to access any control when you’re in the pilot’s seat.

6.) Standard features include steering-wheel audio controls, remote keyless entry, alloy wheels, and a 140-watt sound system, making you feel like a king or queen sitting upon your throne.
7.) The Outlander Sport drives with a light, responsive feel—more like a compact sedan than a larger crossover—making it a no-brainer choice for those who want compactness and maneuverability, not all-out ruggedness.
8.) A nice, low cargo floor and easy-folding rear seatbacks (split 60/40) combine to provide cargo space and versatility that’s very impressive considering the compact exterior.
9.) An elevated seating position in the Outlander Sport offers top-notch outward visibility.
10.) The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport sets itself apart from other models in its class by shying away from sport-utility cues and instead taking a sportier tack—looking (and feeling) more like a tall hatch.

At Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi, we’re so confident that you will be thankful for this vehicle too that we’re offering the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES for $18,997—that’s almost $3,000 off the MSRP! This sale won’t last long, so schedule your test drive today!

Our 2015 Outlander Sports are lined up and ready to go in North Huntingdon

Our new car lot at Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi in North Huntingdon is ready to go with recently added 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sports. So we wanted to take a moment to formally introduce this compact SUV to the people of Pittsburgh and Western PA.

If you’re looking for a compact SUV that is easy on the eyes, wallet, and gas budget, but you don’t want to drive some ho-hum crossover, then check out the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Available all-wheel drive makes it a great year-round companion, as does the impressive 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

Some reviewers have called the 2015 Outlander Sport Mitsubishi’s answer to such cute-utes as the Nissan Juke and Mini Countryman. Mitsubishi forgoes turbocharged engines and high-priced add-ons, relying instead on a bold exterior design, nimble handling, a fuel-efficient engine, and pricing that makes the Outlander Sport one of the most affordable compact SUVs around. The Outlander Sport is as easy to maneuver around town as it is on twisting back roads, and it offers a number of technology upgrades and options younger buyers covet without pushing the bottom line out of their reach.

New for 2015, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport gains an improved continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and more sound insulation for a quieter cabin. SE trims gain LED running lights, piano black trim, and repositioned seat heater switches.

For 2015, the Outlander Sport’s interior remains easy on the eyes and easy to use. Front seats are reasonably comfortable, while the rear is snug for three adults but just fine for two. Behind the rear seat the cargo capacity is not great, at just over 20 cubic feet, but fold down the rear seats and the capacity more than doubles. There is leather on the steering wheel and shift knob, and leather seating is available with the SE Touring Package as an option. The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport’s interior doesn’t claim to be luxurious, but it is useful and comfortable.

In terms of the exterior, up front, the nose is remindful of Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution performance line, while along the sides are deep creases and sculpturing that bring a lot of interest and neatly tie into the door handles. Big wheels and tires fill up the wheel wells, and the rear end is nicely tied off with wraparound taillights and a spoiler over the rear window. An optionally-available roof rack can be used to carry larger items that won’t fit inside.

Check out 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport inventory here, or come by to our convenient Route 30 location in North Huntingdon to check out our inventory in person!
