You’re not going turbo on us? With Mitsubishi you better bet!

Earlier this month at a Mitsubishi make conference with its dealerships the automotive companies announced that the next generation of vehicles with have a little more pep in their step.  The models will have completely updated turbocharged engines.  Leading the way is 1.5 liter turbocharged engines for the 2018 midsize crossover segment.  This should make the die hard Mitsubishi fans excited.  The brand was notorious for being an early adopter of turbocharging in the 1980’s and 1990’s and boosting sales during that time.

Dealers who attended the meeting said Mitsubishi showed images of the crossover that is slotted between the next generation Outlander Sport and Outlander.  Mitsubishi also told dealers that it may only sell 100,000 vehicles per year in the U.S. ,but it is the biggest and most profitable market for Mitsubishi.  Making the US ideal for investment.  Mitsubishi higer ups are considering a turbocharged 1.1 liter engine for the next generation of the Mirage and supcompact cars.  In addition to the 1.1 liter engine a larger turbocharged engine is being developed for the next generation of the Outlander three row crossover.

“They know we’re their best chance,” said Ryan Gremore, chairman of Mitsubishi’s dealer council and general manager of O’Brien Mitsubishi in Normal, Ill. “You put your resources where you get your best results.”

Don Swearingen, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, told dealers that he and CEO Ryujiro Kobashi are traveling to Japan this month to advocate for the turbocharged engine in the Outlander. In an interview, Swearingen said Mitsubishi needs the boosted engine to move the Outlander upscale as fuel economy standards grow more stringent.

The New Mirage and Yes You Are Seeing Things

When the Mitsubishi Mirage was first released many had stereotypes that the Mirage was small and underwhelming.  Overtime customers changed that perception to now being one of the most loyal vehicles in the US.  The new Mitsubishi just hit the ground and they have done even more improvements for the consumer.  When driving the new Mirage and noticed things changed for the better.

Mitsubishi, Jim Shorkey Mirage, Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi,

The first thing that I noticed when I got into the Mirage was the new cloth that the Mirage gained.  It is much softer and less synthetic than the previous models.  The size of the cabin kept its amazing space that only Japanese manufactures have seem to conquer.  It’s so roomie.  The front dash has changed to a cleaner heating and cooling unit and gives you a feeling of sitting back more than previous models.  The suspension, tires and breaks are the same ,but the engine is the difference to the vehicle.  The newly redesigned engine gives you 4 more horse power.  It might not sound like much but with the new speed it improves acceleration.  Older models felt sluggish on acceleration when you pushed the gas pedal, with the engine improved the car is one of the most well balanced vehicles we have seen.  It keeps its impressive MPG with it averaging about 40 miles per gallon.  It inherits Mitsubishi’s industry’s best 100,000 mile warranty.  The 2017 is an upgrade that anyone would love.

Will the Mitsubishi Evo Return as a Plug-In Hybrid SUV?

Ecomento.com recently posed this question on their website, so it got us at Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi thinking—could the beloved Evo return as a plug-in hybrid SUV? Our answer? Quite possibly. Check out what ecomento.com has to say below. Let us know what you think? Would you drive a reimagined Evo as an SUV?

Mitsubishi has hinted at the possibility of using the Evolution badge on a plug-in hybrid SUV before, and now one of the executives is offering a few more details.

Mitsubishi is interested in launching a version of the Outlander Sport (known as the ASX outside the U.S.) with “Evo characteristics,” boss Tetsuro Aikawa said in a recent interview with Autocar.

Aikawa noted that an electrified Evo sets up a bit of wordplay in Japanese. In that language “Oh” pronounced the way it is in “Evo” means king. Then there are the letters “EV,” the acknowledged shorthand for “electric vehicle.” Put the two together and you get… the king of electric vehicles?

The plug-in hybrid Evo would be based on the next-generation Outlander Sport, which was previewed by the Concept XR-PHEV II Mitsubishi unveiled at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The concept’s powertrain consists of a gasoline engine of indeterminate size and a 120-kilowatt electric motor fed by a lithium-ion battery pack. Unlike the outgoing Evo and the majority of crossovers and traditional SUVs, it’s front-wheel drive.

Clearly, Mitsubishi will have to do some work to make its next plug-in hybrid worthy of the Evo name, but it appears to have plenty of time.

While the new Outlander Sport could debut as early as next year, the Evolution model won’t appear until “far into the future,” if it gets built at all.

Mitsubishi will sell a non-ego plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander Sport for buyers looking solely for efficiency, but it’s probably a bit too early to put down a deposit for that performance version.

Still, the idea of a crossover that’s both efficient and sporty is intriguing. If plug-in hybrids are ever going to become truly mainstream, they’ll have to take on more than safe and sensible roles.

Mitsubishi Motors: The Masters of 4WD Innovation

Did you know that Mitsubishi engineers designed and built the very first production four wheel drive (4WD) vehicles in Japan 80 years ago? It’s no wonder Mitsubishi is widely known for their innovative engineering.

AWC is the brand name of a four-wheel drive system developed by Mitsubishi Motors. The system was first implemented in the 2001 Lancer Evolution VII. The 4WD drive technology is the glue that holds Mitsubishi together and has been aided in Mitsubishi’s longstanding motor sports activities and long history in rally racing spanning almost half a century. As a motorsports racing team, Mitsubishi Motors has won the grueling and unforgiving Dakar Rally which, as of the 2015 event, has been run 36 times – and Mitsubishi has been victorious in their category 12 times to date.
2012-Mitsubishi-Lancer-SE-awc-badgeAccording to Mitsubishi: “…AWC is a four-wheel dynamic control philosophy for maximally exploiting the capability of all four tires of a vehicle in a balanced manner to realize predictable handling and high marginal performance.”

Although the AWC was initially developed for the high performance Lancer Evolution full-time four-wheel drive models, the system is now incorporated in Mitsubishi’s other 4WD vehicles, each having its own distinct configuration.
